biography

After finishing school, Gentil joined the French Navy and, as a naval officer , led an expedition from the French Congo across the Shari to Lake Chad between 1895 and 1897, establishing the French protectorate over the Islamic sultanate of Baguirmi .

On January 23, 1899 he was appointed Commissioner (Commissaire) of the Shari region and was one of the leaders of the campaign against the Muslim leader Rabih az-Zubayr , who was killed on April 22, 1900 in the battle of Kousséri . In memory of the commander of the French troops, Amédée-François Lamy , who fell on the same day , Gentil founded the city of Fort Lamy , later the capital of Chad, on May 29 .

On August 25, 1900 he left Fort Lamy and added Fort-de-Possel in what is now the Central African Republic to the Chad Territory on September 5, 1900 . He held the post of acting commissioner of the region until July 2, 1902.

Afterwards he was first lieutenant governor of the Central Congo (Moyen Congo) between 1902 and 1906 and at the same time from 1904 to 1908 General Commissioner (Commissaire Général) of French Congo.
