The administrative community Ilmtal was in the Thuringian Ilm district . It was named after the Ilm valley .

The administrative community was founded on July 14, 1993. It was dissolved on May 31, 1996. With effect from June 1, 1996, the member communities merged to form the new Ilmtal community.
