Vesperae solennes de Confessore

The Vesperae solennes de Confessore KV 339 were composed in 1780 by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart . They follow the Catholic liturgy for a Vespers and comprise six sentences , including five psalms from the Old Testament and the Magnificat from the Gospel of Luke . The name de Confessore indicates that the Vesperae for the liturgical feast day of a holy confessor , e.g. B. of a holy bishop, solennes means "solemn" and indicates an orchestral setting with timpani and trumpets .

The Vesperae are composed for soloists ( soprano , alto , tenor and bass ), four-part choir , 2 trumpets , timpani , 3 trombones , 2 violins and figured bass ( violoncello , double bass , bassoon and organ ). The soprano aria in Laudate Dominum is particularly noteworthy .

All sentences end with the doxology Gloria Patri .

Mozart composed the work while he was court composer for the Archbishop of Salzburg Hieronymus von Colloredo .
