Vesperae solennes de Confessore
The Vesperae solennes de Confessore KV 339 were composed in 1780 by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart . They follow the Catholic liturgy for a Vespers and comprise six sentences , including five psalms from the Old Testament and the Magnificat from the Gospel of Luke . The name de Confessore indicates that the Vesperae for the liturgical feast day of a holy confessor , e.g. B. of a holy bishop, solennes means "solemn" and indicates an orchestral setting with timpani and trumpets .
The Vesperae are composed for soloists ( soprano , alto , tenor and bass ), four-part choir , 2 trumpets , timpani , 3 trombones , 2 violins and figured bass ( violoncello , double bass , bassoon and organ ). The soprano aria in Laudate Dominum is particularly noteworthy .
All sentences end with the doxology Gloria Patri .
The sentences are:
- Dixit ( Ps 110 (109) VUL )
- Confitebor ( Ps 111 (110) VUL )
- Beatus vir ( Ps 112 (111) VUL )
- Laudate pueri ( Ps 113 (112) VUL )
- Laudate Dominum ( Ps 117 (116) VUL )
- Magnificat ( Lk 1.46-55 VUL )
Mozart composed the work while he was court composer for the Archbishop of Salzburg Hieronymus von Colloredo .
