history

The club was founded on October 16, 1896 by students as FV Komet Bremen . On February 12, 1919, this merged with VfB 01 Bremen to form VfB Komet Bremen . The VfB 01 in turn was created in 1913 through the merger of FV Germania Bremen , in 1901 through the merger of Viktoria Bremen and Prussia Bremen , and the FV Preußen Bremen . In 1933 members of the banned workers' sports club ATSV Buntentor joined the VfB Komet. On September 26, 1945, the association was dissolved and re-established as SV Huckelriede .

As early as April 18, 1946, the club took on the name VfB Komet Bremen again and merged in 1971 with the VfR left der Weser Bremen to form SC Rot-Weiß Bremen . On April 26, 1978 the name VfB Komet was adopted again. In 2006, VfB Komet finally merged with TuS Arsten to form TuS Komet Arsten .

Men's soccer

After the First World War , Komet was promoted to the then first-class Western District League in 1921 . Three years later, the team secured the championship after a 3-0 win over VfB Wilhelmshaven . After a dramatic 2-1 win over Arminia Hannover after extra time , Komet moved into the North German finals, where the Bremen team only came in last. In 1927, the district championship went again to Komet, who were able to prevail in the finals against local rivals SV Werder . In the qualification for the North German Championship, however, the team lost to Hannover 96 with 0: 1. A year later, the third district championship followed. At the northern German level, Komet was defeated by Hamburger SV 3: 4 despite a 3-2 lead and again missed the finals.

It was not until 1932 that Komet reached the North German finals again. An unfortunate 3: 4 defeat against Eintracht Braunschweig prevented the jump into the final round. Despite being equal on points with Altona 93 , Bremen did not play a decider. In 1933 VfB Komet was one of the founding members of the Lower Saxony Gauliga , where the team behind Werder became the second Bremen force. In 1935 Komet's middle runner Heinz Warnken became Bremen's first national player . A weak second half of the season 1935/36 caused the team's relegation. It was not until 1943 that the company returned to first class.

After the Second World War, Komet became an elevator team between the highest and second highest amateur league in Bremen. It was not until 1957 that the team was able to establish itself in the Bremen Oberhaus, then called the Landesliga . However, there was no more than a ninth place in 1959. Another successful era began for Komet in the early 1980s. In 1983 the team took third place. Most recently Komet played in Bremen's top division from 1988 to 1992. Since two teams from the Oberliga Nord , Bremer SV and OT Bremen, were relegated, Komet's fourth from last place was no longer enough to stay in the league. Three relegations in a row ensured that Komet slipped into the district league in 1994. After two consecutive promotions, the team played again in the national league between 1996 and 2004.

Women's soccer

In 1980, the soccer players of VfB Komet qualified for the first ever DFB Cup competition . In the first round, however, came the end against the BFC Meteor 06 from Berlin . After a 14-0 defeat on their own pitch, there was only one 7-0 defeat in the second leg. The team did not appear in national divisions, but produced a German national player in Sarah Günther .
