The VfL Heppenheim (full name Verein für Leibesübungen Heppenheim / Bergstrasse ) was a sports club from the Hessian city ​​of Heppenheim . It was founded in 1957 and dissolved in 1997 following bankruptcy proceedings .

VfL was known nationwide for its handball department , whose men 's team rose to the handball Bundesliga in 1980 as champions of the south-west relay of the handball regional league , which was then the second highest division . From there, after only one season, VfL was relegated to the newly founded 2nd handball Bundesliga and a year later to the regional league. 1985 succeeded in being promoted to the second division, in which the team was able to hold out for eleven years until it was relegated to the regional league in 1996.
