The VfL 1905 Zwickau was a football club from the Saxon town of Zwickau . He qualified twice for the finals of the Central German soccer championship .

history

The VfL 1905 Zwickau was built in 1919 from a merger of FC Olympia 1905 Zwickau with Wettin 1905 Zwickau . Olympia Zwickau played in this division when the first-class Gauliga Westsachsen was founded by the Association of Central German Ball Game Clubs (VMBV). In January 1915, FC Sturm Zwickau joined FC Olympia . In the 1917/18 season , the club and the Zwickauer SC formed a war syndicate (KSG). This KSG was able to win the Gau championship of West Saxony and qualified for the Central German football final, in which they were eliminated in the first round after a 2-3 defeat after extra time against SV Teutonia 1901 Chemnitz .

After the merger in 1919, VfL 1905 Zwickau initially played second class, but they missed qualification for the newly introduced Westsachsen district league. It was not until the 1922/23 season that they were promoted to the top division. In the following season, the district leagues were abolished and the Gauligen appeared again as the first leagues to appear. In 1925/26 the club achieved its greatest success, with a point ahead of VfB Glauchau , VfL Zwickau became Gaumeister Westsachsen and qualified for the Central German soccer championship. The first round game on March 7, 1926 against FC Viktoria Lauter was won 2-1, but Lauter protested against the game standings, so the game was repeated in the second round. But Zwickau also won the replay that took place on March 14, 1926, this time by a clear 7: 1. In the quarter-finals, Dresdner SC, one of the strongest clubs in the association, was waiting . As expected, Zwickau lost this quarter-final game on March 21, 1926 against the later Central German soccer champions with 8-1. The other seasons remained the club in the upper table region of the Gauliga Westsachsen without winning the championship again. The local rivals Zwickauer SC could mostly be left behind.

In the course of the Gleichschaltung , the VMBV and consequently also the Gauliga Westsachsen were dissolved a few months after the National Socialists came to power in 1933. The clubs from this Gau were classified in the soccer district of Saxony. Only the two best-placed clubs from West Saxony in 1932/33 received a starting place for the first-class Gauliga Sachsen . With 5th place, VfL 1905 Zwickau missed the qualification and from then on played in the second-class district class Zwickau . 1940/41 the district class could be won, but the club missed promotion to the top division due to the fourth place in the table in the promotion round to Gauliga Sachsen 1941/42 . In the Gauliga Sachsen 1944/45 , which was no longer played , the club would have received a starting place.

In 1945 VfL was dissolved in Zwickau in 1905 . The unofficial successor was the SG Zwickau-Nord . Large parts of the sports community merged in 1949 with players from Aktivist Zwickau and the SG Zwickau-Mitte to form the ZSG Horch Zwickau .
