Victor R. Baker

Victor Richard Baker (born February 19, 1945 in Waterbury , Connecticut ) is an American geologist .

life and work

Baker attended the American high school in Heidelberg until 1963 . He completed his studies of geology at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy in 1967 with a Bachelor of Science degree. He continued his studies at the University of Colorado , where he received his PhD in geology in 1971. After research studies at the University of Texas at Austin , where he held the position of associate professor from 1976, he went to the Australian National University in 1979 .

In 1981 he was appointed to the University of Arizona , where he held various academic positions in the following years, supplemented by visiting professorships at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and an associate professorship at Anna University in Madras .

His research focuses on paleohydrology and prehistoric flood and flood events such as the Missoula floods as well as planetary geomorphology . By 2014, Baker had authored and co-authored over 390 scientific articles and 16 books.

Baker has received numerous awards, including the Distinguished Career Award from the American Geological Society and the David Linton Award from the British Society for Geomorphology, and has held numerous honorary positions. In 1998 he was President of the Geological Society of America . In 1989 he was elected a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science . He is an external member of the Polish Academy of Sciences .

Baker is married to Pauline M. Baker. The couple have two children.
