Vielha e Mijaran ( aran. Catalan Viella i Mijaran or Catalan Mig Aran ) is a Catalan mountain community in the province of Lleida in northern Spain, consisting of several towns and hamlets (pedanías) . It is the capital of the Comarca Val d'Aran .
Location and climate
The municipality is located in the far north-west of Catalonia in the Val d'Aran , a central Pyrenees valley located almost 1000 m high, about 120 km north of Lleida on the upper reaches of the Garonne and at the foot of the Maladeta massif. The climate is temperate to warm.
Population development
Since the community was founded in 1970, the population has grown from almost 2,000 to around 5,500.
Economy and Infrastructure
The most important source of income is tourism . The main activities are hiking, horse riding, mountaineering and winter sports, especially in Baqueira-Beret , the largest winter sports area in the Pyrenees and all of Spain.
history
The present municipality was created in 1970 through the merger of the towns of Arròs e Vila , Betlan , Escunhau , Gausac , Vielha and Vilac . The main town is Vielha.
