The four towers in Koblenz are an ensemble of four historical buildings in the old town at the intersection of the streets Am Plan - Löhrstraße - Altengraben - Marktstraße. The name four towers is derived from a richly decorated bay window attached to each house .

history

The predecessor buildings of the later Four Towers were built in 1608. They all fell victim to the destruction of the Palatinate War of Succession in 1688 . The four buildings of today's ensemble were built:

  • Am Plan 2: 1692 (destroyed in 1944, reconstructed in 1950)
  • Löhrstraße 2: 1691 (damaged in 1944, restored in 1960)
  • Marktstrasse 1: 1690
  • Marktstrasse 2: 1689 (destroyed in 1944, reconstruction in 1949/50)

All four buildings were probably the work of the court architect Johann Christoph Sebastiani . In terms of architectural history, the houses are at the transition from the Renaissance to the Baroque .

The house on plan 2

The building at Plan 2 was rebuilt in 1692. The originally three-story house was given a further floor in 1863. Destroyed in 1944, the building including the three-story bay window was rebuilt in a simplified form in 1950, with arcades being added on the ground floor. According to the inscription on the bay window, the house was called the Green Tree . Today there is a cigar shop in this building.

The house Löhrstrasse 2

The building at Löhrstrasse 2 was rebuilt in 1691. The three-story house is plastered in the lower area, and exposed half-timbering in the upper floor and in the gables. The two-storey bay window is richly decorated and is the only one of the ensemble in the upper part to also consist of half-timbering . In 1944 the gable and roof were severely damaged in the air raids on Koblenz, and the restoration finally took place in 1960. The house called Zu St. Petrus housed a pharmacy from 1730 to the 2000s. Today there is a jeweler in this building.

The house at Marktstrasse 1

The Marktstrasse 1 building was rebuilt in 1690. The three-story house is plastered in the lower area, and exposed half-timbering in the upper floor and in the gables. The two-storey bay window is also richly decorated. The building survived the bombing of World War II unscathed. It was restored in 1978, as indicated by an inscription on the bay window ( 1690 JR / Restored 1978 ). Today there is a fast food restaurant in this building.

The house at Marktstrasse 2

The Marktstrasse 1 building was probably rebuilt in 1689. The main guard house was originally located here, as indicated by a memorial plaque on the building, the building and the bay window were extended by one floor up in the second half of the 19th century. The four-storey house was completely destroyed in 1944 and rebuilt in a simplified form in 1949/50, with the three-storey bay window also being restored. In 1954, Artur Eierstock founded the Koblenz-known company “Teppichhaus Eierstock” in this historic building. Today there is a doctor's practice in this building.
