Viktor Leonidowitsch Demyanenko

Viktor Leonidowitsch Demjanenko ( Russian Виктор Леонидович Демьяненко ; born  August 26, 1958 in Alma-Ata , Kazakh SSR , Soviet Union ) is a former Soviet boxer . He was European amateur champion in 1979 and silver medalist at the Olympic Games in Moscow in 1980 in the lightweight category.

Career

Viktor Demyanenko started boxing as a teenager. After initial successes, he was delegated to the Dinamo Alma-Ata sports club and fought as an adult at a height of 1.67 meters in the lightweight, the weight class up to 60 kg body weight.

In 1976 he started at the Junior European Championship in Izmir in featherweight and won the championship with four wins. In 1978 he won the seniors at the 19th championship of the protection and security organs of the socialist countries in Łódź . In the final he defeated the Cuban Danilo Diago on points (5: 0 judges' votes).

In 1979, Viktor Demjanenko was the first lightweight champion of the Soviet Union with a victory over Vasily Solomin and won the title at the 7th Spartakiad of the USSR with a victory over Marat Kabirow . At the subsequent European Championship in Cologne , he won over Sebastiano Sotgia from Italy on points, Adam Piwowarski from Poland by breaking off in the first round and Richard Nowakowski from the GDR on points (5-0). In the final, he also defeated René Weller from Germany on points, but a judge had decided for Weller. He also celebrated a great victory at the 1989 World Cup in New York . He won there over Edward Daly from Australia , Michael Dominguez from Puerto Rico and David Lee Armstrong from the United States and thus secured 1st place.

Viktor Demyanenko was also the champion of the Soviet Union in 1980 . In the final he beat Vladimir Sorokin . Although the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow were boycotted by many Western countries, he then had to compete five times in the boxing tournament there. He defeated while Mohamed Bangura from Sierra Leone by terminating id second round, Jong Ung Jo of North Korea and Jordan Lessow from Bulgaria on points, Richard Nowakowski by termination id 1st Round (injury) and met in the finals on Ángel Herrera of Cuba , the shortly before the Olympic Games he had clearly beaten on points at the Grand Prix of Ústí nad Labem . In the Olympic final, however, Viktor Demjanenko had bad luck, because he had to be taken out of the fight due to an injury in the third round and thus missed the Olympic gold medal.

In 1981 Viktor Demjanenko was not at the start of the Soviet championship and in 1982 he was defeated in the lightweight quarter-finals against Viktor Rybakov and therefore only came in 5th place. In 1983 he secured himself the third championship title at the Soviet championship with a point victory over Vladimir Stepanov and was also the winner of the 8th Spartakiad with a non-fighting victory over Yuri Gladischew. With his third championship title, he also returned to the national team and started at the European Championships in Varna . There he won over Mehmet Demir from Turkey (5: 0) and Hartmut Krüger from the GDR (5: 0), but lost in the semifinals against Emil Tschuprenski from Bulgaria on points (0: 5).

At the Soviet championship in 1984 Viktor Demyanenko lost in the semifinals against Nurlan Abdukalykow because he had to be taken out of the fight again because of an injury. He had no chance of being accepted into the Soviet Olympic team. However, a start at the Olympic Games in Los Angeles this year would not have been possible anyway because the Soviet Union boycotted these games.

After 1984, Viktor Demyanenko ended his career as an active boxer. He became a coach and has lived in Kazakhstan ( Almaty ) since the fall of the Soviet Union . His son Vitaly Demjanenko (* 1983) followed in his footsteps and is a successful professional boxer. He himself is a board member of the Asian Boxing Council (2009).
