Victor Ehrenberg

Victor Leopold Ehrenberg (born November 22, 1891 in Altona ; died January 25, 1976 in London ) was a German-British ancient historian of Jewish descent who emigrated to Great Britain due to National Socialist persecution.

Life

Ehrenberg, nephew of the lawyer of the same name, Victor Ehrenberg , first studied architecture in Stuttgart after attending school in Kassel, and then from 1912 classical studies in Göttingen and Berlin. After four years of military service in World War I, he continued his studies in Tübingen, where he received his doctorate in 1920, and completed his habilitation in Frankfurt am Main in 1922.

In 1929 he was appointed to the chair of ancient history at the German University in Prague . Shortly before the German troops marched in, Ehrenberg and his family fled to Great Britain in February 1939, where he received various teaching assignments (including in Newcastle) during the Second World War. In 1946 he took over a professorship at the University of London after rejecting a chair in Munich because he did not want to return to Germany. Since 1958 he was a corresponding member of the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences .

The focus of Ehrenberg's wide-ranging scientific work was in the area of ​​Greek history. His best-known book dealt under the title Aristophanes and the People of Athens with the "Sociology of Old Attic Comedy".

Ehrenberg married the teacher Eva Sommer in 1919. Her sons were the historian Geoffrey Rudolph Elton and the physicist and educator Lewis RB Elton , a grandson of the comedian Ben Elton .
