General Vincenzo Camporini

Vincenzo Camporini (born June 21, 1946 in Como ) is a retired Italian general . In 2006 he became Chief of Staff of the Italian Air Force , from 2008 to 2011 he was Chief of Staff of the Italian Armed Forces .

Career

Camporini attended the Air Force Academy from 1965 to 1969 and graduated from the University of Naples with a degree in aerospace engineering . In the following years he flew " Starfighter " aircraft with a reconnaissance squadron in Verona-Villafranca (3 ° Stormo) . After attending NATO Defense College in 1977 , he was Lieutenant Colonel Squadron Captain of the 28th Group of the 3rd Reconnaissance Squadron in Verona from 1979 to 1981 . He then attended a further general staff course at the command academy of the Italian Air Force and was adjutant to the chief of staff of the Aeronautica Militare from 1983 to 1985 .

From 1985 to 1988 Camporini worked as a colonel at the Air Force General Staff in the area of ​​research and development, after which he headed the flight test center in Pratica di Mare near Rome and became an Italian representative at a research facility of the Advisory Group for Aerospace Research and Development (AGARD). In another position with the General Staff, Camporini headed a department for the technical development of weapon systems. In this role he also worked on the Eurofighter program and was a representative at the NATO Airborne Early Warning & Control Force Command (NAEW).

As brigadier general Camporini headed the operations department of the Air Force General Staff from 1993 to 1996, as major general he was "inspector" of naval aviation and then "inspector" for aviation safety . From November 1998 to April 2001 he was head of the planning department of the General Staff of the Armed Forces and then until February 2004 Deputy Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces.

In 2004 Camporini obtained a Masters in International Relations from the University of Trieste .

From March 2004 to September 2006 Camporini headed the command academy of the Italian armed forces .

On September 20, 2006 Camporini became Chief of Staff of the Italian Air Force. In this function he visited his German counterpart Klaus-Peter Stieglitz and various German Air Force facilities in May 2007 . In the summer of 2007 Camporini became a Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society .

On November 29, 2007, the Italian government designated him as the new Chief of Staff of the Italian Armed Forces. He took over this office on February 12, 2008 from Admiral Giampaolo Di Paola . On January 18, 2011 Camporini handed it over to Army General Biagio Abrate .

After the end of his military career, he became involved in foreign policy at the Istituto Affari Internazionali . At the end of 2013 he became a member of the social democratic Partito Democratico .

General Vincenzo Camporini has a daughter and two grandchildren. His wife Silvana died in January 2008.
