'Vinhao' is a red wine variety . It is an old, indigenous variety from northern Portugal .
Origin, descent
Is an old autochthonous red wine from Portugal. Genetic studies made it clear that the varieties 'Sousão' and 'Vinhao' are identical.
distribution
It originally came from the Minho , where it is still used today to produce the red Vinho Verde . Because of their color strength was also in the region of 1790 Douro used to the port to give a dark color. However, it is also popular in Spanish Galicia under the name 'Sousón' . Smaller plantings are also known in South Africa , California (→ viticulture in California , 62 acres = 25 ha.) And Australia . In 2010 the area under cultivation worldwide was 3,160 ha.
Ampelographic features
- The tip of the shoot is lightly hairy.
- The young leaf is bronzed and three-lobed. The leaf is small, five-lobed with a pronounced central lobe with a V-shaped open petiole.
- The grape is small, compact, cylindrical and shouldered. The berries are medium-sized, round, black-blue in color and have a strong scent. Berries have a thick berry skin and the flesh is soft, juicy and has an astringent taste.
Maturity : early
properties
The growth is medium strong and upright. The variety brings medium yields. If the sunlight is too strong, the berries dry out easily.
Wine
The late-ripening variety results in deep red, tannin-rich, bitter-rough, acidic fruity wines that find their way into port wine in the blend .
Descendants
The variety 'Vinhao' was a cross partner in the new breed of the Israeli variety 'Argaman' .
