Vintersea is an American progressive metal band from Portland , Oregon , which was founded in 2014 under the name Asterion .

history

Guitarist Riley Nix and drummer Jeremy Spencer had been playing together since high school days. Since their previous band had split up, they put an ad on Craigslist in the summer of 2014 . Shortly afterwards, the singer Avienne Low, who had just moved to the US from Malaysia , became aware of the two and joined them. The guitarist Jorma Spaziano, who had moved to Oregon from the east coast of the United States , joined as a further member . The first rehearsals and the first appearances took place together under the name Asterion. In October 2014 the EP Constellations was released . In January 2016, the group was renamed Vintersea. The following year the debut album The Gravity of Fall was released. From 2017 worldwide appearances followed together with Jinjer , Ne Obliviscaris , Sarah Longfield , The Ocean Collective and Arkona . At the end of 2019 the group signed a record deal with M-Theory Audio , and the album Illuminated was released in the same year . The label had been brought closer to the band two years earlier through a performance in Sacramento , California , through a recommendation from the group Graveshadow , who were also under contract with this label. After the album was released, appearances followed with The Browning, among others .

style

According to Mike from thecirclepit.com , the band tries to reproduce appealing landscapes in song form on The Gravity of Fall , combining elements from progressive , black , death and post-metal . In the songs, the group create majestic and massive soundscapes. Sebastian Schilling from Rock Hard noticed influences from Post-, Death- and Black-Metal while listening to Illuminated . The sound and appearance would position the band in modern progressive metal. In the songs you combine “[f] smiling blast passages” with “fragile acoustic parts ” and “approaches of Devin Townsend- like bombast”. Low's pleasant singing voice, with growls and screams , is also characteristic. Overall, the music is suitable for fans of Ihsahn , Devin Townsend and Periphery . In the following issue, Andreas Schiffmann wrote that the second album, unlike its predecessor, was no longer written by Riley Nix alone. In an interview with him, Avienne Low stated that Illuminated is about "a group of conditioned people" who "live in isolation and believe that they are in a paradise while propaganda is tricked into them and they are pretended to be safe".
