description

Viola scorpiuroides is a dwarf shrub that reaches heights of 10 to 30 centimeters. The stem is corky and woody. The leaves are 2 to 5 cm long and 0.5 to 1.2 cm wide, spatulate with a clear stalk, entire, almost glabrous and pointed. The stipules are triangular-sub-like. The petals are 8 to 12 millimeters long and bright yellow in color; the spur is 3 to 4 mm long and blue-violet.

The flowering period extends from January to March (rarely from December to April).

Occurrence

Viola scorpiuroides occurs in Greece ( Kythira , Antikythira and Crete ), Libya ( Cyrenaica and Marmarica ) and in northwestern Egypt . In Crete, the species grows on gypsum and other lime-poor soils on Neogen in rocky Phrygana and in dry rock crevices at altitudes of 0 to 600 meters.
