The purple-brown capsule owl ( Sideridis rivularis ) is a butterfly ( moth ) from the family of the owl butterflies (Noctuidae).

features

butterfly

The wingspan of the moth is 29 to 34 millimeters. The forewings show a rich color spectrum, consisting of a mixture of purple, reddish, dark brown, greenish and yellowish tones. Newly hatched butterflies have a distinctive purple sheen. The yellow-framed ring and kidney flaws are particularly evident in the black-and-brown colored specimens. These run into each other at the base and thus result in a V-shaped pattern. Concrete blemishes are large and colored black. The yellowish wavy line is strongly jagged, shows a clear W and shows black, inwardly directed arrow spots. The hind wings are a single color, light gray-brown.

Caterpillar

Young caterpillars are initially dark green in color. Later they take on a light green color and have yellowish back and side stripes and white spots. As adults, they change appearance to a yellowish to brownish shade with rust-brown slashes.

Geographical distribution and habitat

The species is widespread from the northern part of the Iberian Peninsula through all of Europe, including the British Isles and Fennos Scandinavia . To the east it occurs through East Asia to Manchuria . The southern distribution includes the Mediterranean area - but excluding Greece - as well as parts of Small and Central Asia. In the Alps it rises to around 1,600 meters. The purple-brown capsule owl can be found predominantly on warm slopes, in meadows as well as in light forests and gardens.

Way of life

The moths are nocturnal and like to suckle on various flowers, such as pigeon goiter ( Silene vulgaris ), common adder's head ( Echium vulgare ), common soapwort ( Saponaria officinalis ) and butterfly lilac ( Buddleja davidii ). They also appear on artificial light sources and baits . The moths fly in two generations from late April to early July and from early August to mid-September. Univoltine tribes also occur in the northern regions . The caterpillars initially feed on the flowers and fruit capsules of their forage plants, later also on their leaves and live on various low plants, including cucumber ( Silene ) and pechnelken ( Lychnis ) as well as pigeon goiter ( Cucubalus baccifer ) and others.

Danger

In Germany, the purple-brown capsule owl is widespread and can be found in large numbers in certain areas, so that it is classified as not endangered on the Red List of Endangered Species .
