Virgil Percec (* 1946 in Romania ) is an American - Romanian chemist at the University of Pennsylvania , Philadelphia .

Percec obtained a bachelor's degree from the Polytechnic in Iași ( Technical University of Iași ) in 1969 and a Ph.D. in 1976 from CI Simionescu. in polymer chemistry . Initially, he continued his research there on cis -poly ( phenylacetylene ). From 1981 he worked as a postdoctoral fellow with Hans-Joachim Cantow at the Institute for Macromolecular Chemistry at the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg in Germany and until 1982 with JP Kennedy at the University of Akron , Ohio , in the USA. In 1982 he became an assistant professor at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland , Ohio, where he became an associate professor in 1984 and a full professorship in macromolecular chemistry in 1986 . Since 1999 he has been P. Roy Vagelos Professor of Chemistry at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia.

Percec is concerned with a biological process-oriented synthesis of complex non-biological molecules (in particular covalent and supramolecular polymers, liquid crystalline polymers and dendrimers ) that have biological properties. He has authored over 650 scientific publications and 12 monographs and holds 50 patents.
