from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Vitus Loers (* 1792 in Großheide near Mönchen-Gladbach ; † September 26, 1862 in Trier ) was a German classical philologist and director of the Friedrich-Wilhelm-Gymnasium in Trier .

Life

Vitus Loers came from Großheide. There are few testimonies about his life. From 1818 he studied philology at the Friedrich Wilhelms University in Bonn. On December 23, he was orally examined by Carl Friedrich Heinrich , Wilhelm Adolf Diesterweg and Karl Josef Hieronymus Windischmann . In 1821 he became a teacher at the Trier grammar school (renamed Friedrich Wilhelm grammar school in 1896 ). In 1825 he was a senior teacher there. On November 17, 1835, he was introduced as the second director, alongside Johann Hugo Wyttenbach , by Theodor Brüggemann . His annual salary was 1,000 thalers. Loers was regarded as reactionary and was entrusted by the government with the political supervision of the grammar school. After Wyttenbach was retired, the government promoted Loers to director of the grammar school. His nickname at the school was "Veit". After a long illness he retired May 1, 1858. His successor was Anton Josef Reisacker (1821–1882). Vitus Loers died in Trier on September 26, 1859. He donated two scholarships to his school because he was single.

Vitus Loers stood out as a philologist especially through his text comparisons of Ovid . He published his writings on this in the Trier school programs, but also independently in various publishers. He was also recognized by the fact that two works were allowed to appear in the Rheinisches Museum für Philologie . There are also some reviews in specialist journals known,

Loers and his student Karl Marx

Loers taught Latin to Karl Marx in the school year 1834/1835. To this end, he used texts from Ovid, Thucydides of Socrates , Homer and from Antigone by Sophocles without the difficult passages from the choirs. On August 10, 1835, Marx and his classmates were informed by Loers with the translation from the Greek “From Sophoclis Trachiniae. V. 140-176 “. He rated the translation with a “3”. “He translated some things very well; but in most cases he either failed to find the poet's sense of the word or rendered Greek in a rather elegant manner in German ”. On August 15, the Latin essay "An pricipatus Augusti merito inter feliciores reipublicae Romanae aetates numeratur?" Was submitted by Wyttenbach and Loers. The teachers rated the work with a “2-3” and noted: “Apart from what we have noted in the respective places and several errors, especially towards the end after the treatment of the material, after the knowledge of the history proven and after All in all, a considerable job in striving for good Latin expression. But what a disgraceful handwriting !!! "

Heinrich Marx reported to his son Karl about Loers on November 18, 1835: “Loers found it very bad that you did not pay him a farewell visit. Only you and Clemens were the only ones who said H. Schlick . I had to make up my mind to an innocent liar and tell him ... we were there during his absence ". He also wrote:" H. Loers has been appointed 2nd director, and yesterday was H. [Brüg] emann as commisarius here for Installation. It was a great ... [celebration] where H. B [rüggeman] n and Loers spoke. H. Loers gave a big dinner at noon, where I was too. "[...]" Bey the occasion of the festival of H. Loers, the situation of the good Wyttenbach was extremely painful to me. ""
