Vltimas is a multinational death metal band that was founded in 2015.

history

The band was formed in 2015 after guitarist Rune “Blasphemer” Eriksen ( Aura Noir , Earth Electric , ex- Mayhem ) had worked on a few riffs and introduced them to drummer Flo Mounier . The cast was completed by David Vincent as singer, who had just left Morbid Angel at the time. Eriksen and Vincent had planned to be musically active together since 2012, but this was not possible due to Vincent's involvement with Morbid Angel and Eriksen's involvement with other projects. Together they worked on their debut album at The Noiz Faktory Recording Studios in Georgetown , Texas . The recorded material was later refined by Eriksen in his home studio in Portugal , before Mounier and Eriksen returned to Texas and finished the final work on the songs in Vincent's studio. In May 2018, the band and producer Jaime Gomez Arellano went to Orgone Studios in Woburn , England , to record their Deüben album, which was released in March 2019 under the name Something Wicked Marches In on Season of Mist . The bass was played on the album by Rune Eriksen. In 2019 the band could be seen at various festivals such as the Danish Copenhell , the French Hellfest , the Polish Mystic Festival , the Norwegian Tons of Rock and the German Wacken Open Air . In January and February 2020 they went on a European tour with Abbath and 1349 .

style

In the biography of laut.de it was stated that the band tries to combine "icy Scandinavian riffing with the brutal darkness of Death Metal ". On the album Eriksen plays “almost uninterrupted high-speed tremolos ”, while Mounier plays “ double bass patterns at a speed that most people would probably not be physically capable of even with years of practice”. Vincent's singing consists of growls , whereby he occasionally drifts into "his very own version of epic choirs", which is reminiscent of old songs by Morbid Angel. In his review of Something Wicked Marches In , Manuel Berger from laut.de wrote that the album could be considered a benchmark for death metal in 2019. He notes that Eriksen's "breathless tremolo runs" would be reminiscent of early Morbid Angel, whereby he also incorporated characteristics of Norwegian Black Metal . The album is also characterized by “relatively catchy riff breaks”, frequent tempo changes and occasional technically demanding time changes. Mounier's drumming is characterized by fast double bass and blast beats , but he is also capable of "filigree-looking fills ". Vincent's deep growls were only occasionally interrupted by clear vocals. Overall, the album moves on the edge between modern and traditional Death Metal.

Rock Hard's Andreas Schiffmann wrote in his review of Something Wicked Marches In that the album is an appeal for self-empowerment. The album is arranged by Eriksen in a more varied way compared to the releases of other death and black metal bands . Mounier would not only play blastbeats, which "gives the material clear contours despite the traditional style", which means that all songs can be clearly distinguished from one another. Characteristic of the songs is also a charismatic chant. In the same issue, Schiffmann interviewed Rune Eriksen. He stated that he had composed the main features of the songs on the album by himself and that Flo Mounier had brought them into their final form. The lyrics would come from David Vincent, but the subject matter of the songs had been discussed in advance among all members. The songs would be about the Roman Empire and satanic world domination.

Robert Müller from Metal Hammer also assigned the album to Death Metal, which was played in a demanding manner and the vocals were performed with confidence. Overall, the “balance between modern, clean design and timeless Death Metal signature” was successful. A previous issue Björn Springorum described the album as massive, precise and catchy. At the beginning he immediately made it clear that this was not Black Metal. There are occasional Black Metal moments, but mostly “ominous, fatal Death Metal of deadly precision”. The music is brutal, fast and technically demanding, but always catchy, epic and understandable. In an interview with him, Rune Eriksen stated that he orientated himself on the music of the 1980s, so that he created a " Deep Purple on the Death Metal trip".
