Volker Büttner (born July 4, 1939 in Leipzig ) is a German television director , sound engineer and lighting technician.

life and career

His father was a goldsmith and so he was taught the basics of this craft in childhood and adolescence. But craft wasn't for him and he wanted to study zoology or veterinary medicine. After graduating from high school, Volker Büttner moved to Berlin with his brother in 1957. He reported to the riot police in order to obtain an immigration permit and only worked there for 14 days. At the age of 19 he was drawn to film and television. First he was looking for a job at the Nalepastraße radio station of the GDR broadcasting company in Berlin-Oberschöneweide . When he was sent away from there, he went to the German television station in Berlin-Adlershof and was hired as a sound assistant . Since everything was still broadcast live and in 1959 a lot was still improvised, he was taught "everything about headlights " by a lighting technician, which is how he got to " setting lights ".

He was interested and became familiar with sound and lighting technology and soon worked as a freelance assistant director . This was followed by studying directing at the Babelsberg University of Film and Television . When he was 21 years old he started his own television production. Color television was introduced during the time of military service with the NVA . Since then, every broadcast had to be discussed with image engineers and color consultants. The young filmmaker developed new TV programs as part of the team.

In 1979, at the age of 40, he got the post of chief director in the Palace of the Republic in Berlin (GDR cultural center and seat of the People's Chamber ). With the “perfectly built and well equipped” Great Hall of the palace, he had the opportunity to develop productions such as Rock for Peace or Revue Fun Must Be . When the palace was closed in 1990, the director and his team were released. With the withdrawal of the Soviet Army from Germany, the officers' house in Karlshorst was also cleared. This venue was then used as the " Theater of the East " by Büttner and the Palast team.

In 1999 the director Büttner retired. Still active, he has since worked for local television in Brandenburg: Königs Wusterhausen , Potsdam and Neuruppin for RuppinTV. He learned television production from the ground up and so he doesn't feel connected to the theater, but still to media work. Classic TV programs are also preferable to the stream . From his experience, he criticizes the current television program: instead of new ideas, old recipes for success are constantly being reissued. "Maybe it is also difficult to find new ideas."

Private

On his 80th birthday, he said: his life would offer enough material for one novel, maybe even two. But the director doesn't even think about writing an autobiography. “I'm lazy and a coward,” he says and waves it away. Such a book, someone else would have to write that about him.

Büttner has lived in Wuthenow since 2003 . He is a member of the state press conference and chairman of the Neuruppin cultural advisory board. He sees himself as an animal lover.
