Volker Spangenberg

Volker Spangenberg (born October 9, 1955 in Bad Homburg in front of the height ) is a Baptist theologian and professor of practical theology at the Evangelical Free Church Theological Seminar (University of Applied Sciences) in Wustermark-Elstal . From 2006 to 2014 he was also its rector.

Life

After graduating from high school, Volker Spangenberg studied Protestant theology at the Eberhard Karls University in Tübingen from 1976 . In 1981 he went to the theological seminar of the Federation of Evangelical Free Churches in Hamburg-Horn in order to prepare for the service of a Baptist clergyman through a so-called candidate year . In 1982, however, he returned to the University of Tübingen and was a research assistant there until 1990 . 1991 received his doctorate with a dissertation on the glory of the covenant: The determination of the biblical concept of "glory" with Hans urs von Balthasar as a doctor of theology. The doctoral supervisor was the Protestant systematist and religious philosopher Eberhard Jüngel . After completing his doctorate, Spangenberg was appointed pastor of the Evangelical Free Church in Heidelberg in 1991. He received his recognition as pastor of the Federation of Evangelical Free Churches after completing the three-year probationary period customary in this Free Church in 1993. In 1997 Spangenberg was appointed to the theological seminary mentioned above . Here he took over the lectureship for practical theology , which was converted into a professorship in 2003. In 2006 he succeeded Stefan Stiegler as Rector of the Theological Seminary . He remained in this position until mid-October 2014. His successor as the university's rector was Michael Kißkalt . In addition, Volker Spangenberg was a member of the supervisory board of Diakoniewerk Bethel (Berlin), but resigned along with three other members of the supervisory board in the course of the expulsion of three deaconesses in 2015.

Volker Spangenberg researches primarily in the area of ​​his teaching area. Topics include the factors of church growth and the contributions of German Baptism to pastoral theology and liturgy .
