Life

Volkmar Schmidt, the son of the mathematician and astronomer Hermann Schmidt (1903-1993), attended the Carolo-Alexandrinum high school in Jena from 1943. After his family was evacuated to Heidenheim an der Brenz , he attended the Hellenstein High School there. In November 1950 the family moved to Braunschweig, where Schmidt attended the New High School until June 1951 and passed the external school-leaving examination on September 14, 1951.

Schmidt began his studies at the Technical University of Braunschweig in the winter semester of 1951/1952 . He first studied mathematics and physics and after a year moved to the University of Würzburg . Here he switched to the subjects of Classical Philology, German Studies and Comparative Linguistics . From the summer semester 1955 to the winter semester 1956/1957 he studied in Tübingen with Wolfgang Schadewaldt , Hildebrecht Hommel , Walter Jens and Ernst Zinn . His academic teachers in Würzburg included Franz Dirlmeier and Joseph-Hans Kühn .

After the first state examination on November 7, 1958, Schmidt worked from 1959 to 1960 as a research assistant at the Department of Comparative Linguistics at the University of Würzburg (with Alfons Nehring ). A DAAD scholarship enabled him to study at the Papyrological Institute of the University of Florence from autumn 1960 to summer 1962 . After his return he worked for a few months as a research assistant and continued his studies from the winter semester 1962/1963 at the Free University of Berlin . Here he was assistant to Rudolf Kassel , who was reviewer for his doctoral thesis with Hans Schwabl . Schmidt received his doctorate in 1966 with his dissertation Linguistic Investigations on Herondas (grade: summa cum laude).

Schmidt found his position in life in Hamburg, where from June 1, 1966 he managed the official business of a research assistant at the Department of Classical Philology. On September 9, 1969, he was appointed Scientific Assistant, December 17, 1970, Scientific Council, April 22, 1971 Scientific Senior Council, and June 18, 1984, Professor. He died a week before retiring on September 23, 1998 after several months of illness.

In addition to his dissertation, Schmidt particularly stood out with his work on the Index Hippocraticus , which he supervised until graduation (1989). Schmidt published few of his own writings, but he participated in numerous companies of his colleagues. He helped his doctoral supervisor Rudolf Kassel with the Poetae Comici Graeci collection , as well as the editor of the Aeschylus fragments, Stefan Radt . Thanks to his papyrological and Indo-European knowledge in particular, Schmidt was able to provide valuable improvements and additions.
