history

The bank was founded in March 1858 as an advance payment association in Heidelberg under the leadership of the businessman Eduard Pickford . After Karlsruhe , this was the second of its kind in the Grand Duchy of Baden . Following the enactment of the cooperative law in Baden in 1870, it was transferred as a cooperative and renamed the Heidelberg commercial bank . In 1919 the name was changed to Handels- und Gewerbebank ("H + G-Bank"). In the mid-1960s, a process of concentration began within the cooperative banking sector, which in 1971 led to the merger of the umbrella organizations of Volksbanks and Raiffeisenbanks. As part of this development, the Handels- und Gewerbebank merged with the Raiffeisenbank Heidelberg-Handschuhsheim in 1976. In 2000 the bank merged with Volksbank Ziegelhausen and in 2001 with Volksbank Kurpfalz; in 2009 the Volksbank Neckar-Bergstrasse in Schriesheim was added. In 2015 the bank was renamed Volksbank Kurpfalz eG .
