history

Volksbank im Bergisches Land eG was created in 2017 from the merger of Volksbank Remscheid-Solingen eG and Credit- und Volksbank in Wuppertal. Both predecessor institutes have their own long history.

Volksbank Remscheid-Solingen eG

In 1987 the Volksbanken Remscheid and Solingen merged to form the Volksbank Remscheid-Solingen. Its history began with the founding of Volksbank Solingen on February 4, 1918. Two thirds of the founders belonged to the craft and related professions. Otto Ruppert, Friedrich Langenberg and Adalbert Weck formed the first board of directors.

The Volksbank Remscheid has its roots in the bank for trade and commerce founded in 1927 and the Schutzsparkasse Remscheid, which was founded in the same year and which merged to form Volksbank Remscheid in 1944. At that time there were branches in Remscheid-Mitte, Remscheid-Lüttringhausen, Wuppertal-Ronsdorf, Radevormwald, Hückeswagen and Wermelskirchen as well as the head office in Remscheid-Lennep.

Over the years, the business areas grew through further mergers and branch openings.

In 1979 the head office of the bank moved to Tenter Weg. Since then there has been a branch on Kölner Strasse in Lennep.

Credit- and Volksbank eG

Credit- und Volksbank was created in 1966 through the merger of Volksbank Wuppertal eG and Barmer Creditbank, while at the same time they took over Volksbank Niederberg eGmbH, based in Mettmann.

The roots of Volksbank Wuppertal lie in the “Savings and Loans Association for Saint Joseph”, which was founded on December 2nd, 1869 by 43 citizens of the city. This date is considered to be the founding date of Credit- und Volksbank eG in banking history, making it one of the first cooperative banks in Germany. After several name changes, the institute was entered in the cooperative register on October 6, 1941 as Volksbank Wuppertal eGmbH.

Barmer Creditbank was registered as an AG on December 18, 1900; their legal predecessors were the Barmer Handwerker-Loan-Verein and the Barmer Volksbank eG. In 1932 it returned to its original legal form as a registered cooperative as Barmer Credit eGmbH.

Over the years, the business areas grew through further mergers and branch openings.
