Election fraud

The electoral law of the GDR allowed public control of the electoral count on paper. In practice, this did not take place for fear of repression. In the 1986 Volkskammer elections, a group led by Pastor Rainer Eppelmann dared to check eight polling stations in Berlin-Friedrichshain. In these eight polling stations alone, 547 voters did not take part in the election. However, the official election result showed only 840 citizens for the whole of East Berlin who did not vote. There is therefore a high probability that the election was fraudulent . In the municipal elections in the GDR in 1989 , controls were carried out by citizens according to the same pattern. The electoral frauds uncovered there were a trigger for the turning point.
