The Volksschwimmhalle Lankow was a swimming pool in the Schwerin district of Lankow in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. The term Volksschwimmhalle was a typical GDR term for public swimming pools. From 2016 to 2017 a renovation and renovation took place, which resulted in 16 apartments in addition to a small swimming pool. The indoor swimming pool with the striking wave roof was designed by the Halle architect Herbert Müller , while the reconstruction was designed by the Schwerin architects Schelfbauhütte. The roof consists of hyperbolic paraboloid shells (also: "HP shells") and was therefore listed in 2015 as a historical monument . In 2019, the renovation was recognized by the Reconstruction Loan Corporation (KfW).

Location and facilities

The hall is located at Lübecker Straße 266 on the northeast bank of Lake Lankower . On an area of approx. 1550 m² it originally had two swimming pools and a sauna as well as the associated sanitary and changing areas.

history

The building was completed in 1976. In 2012, operations were discontinued as a result of the new construction of the swimming pool at Großer Dreesch . Various re-use concepts were proposed, but they could not be implemented.

The building was renovated from August 2016 to September 2017. In addition to the new swimming area and a practice, eight maisonette apartments and eight apartments were built.

The hall construction of the Bitterfeld type has special roof elements, so-called hyperbolic paraboloid shells (short: "HP shells"). This component of a long, curved and at the same time semi-tubular roof rack was developed by the architect Herbert Müller . The advantage of this invention was the "increased buckling and bending stiffness " as well as material savings. The Lankower Volksschwimmhalle is the last building of its kind in Schwerin and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. Another swimming pool of the same type in Schwerin was demolished in 2013 .

Planned demolition and monument status

In the course of the review, initiated by the Schwerin architect Gottreich Albrecht, the State Office for Culture and Monument Preservation Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania determined the monument status of the swimming pool. The reason given was the roof construction, which is unique in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania from today's perspective. The state office demanded that the building be included in the city's list of monuments.

The state capital then examined appeals . An entry in the list of monuments by the city of Schwerin was therefore not made, instead the demolition plans were pushed forward. Therefore, in August 2015, the State Office demanded the immediate cessation and omission of all work that serves to demolish the building or prepare for demolition. In a press release, the city administration contradicted this request, instead they wanted to appeal against what they saw as an illegal order and continue with the demolition work. An entry in the list of monuments by the city took place in 2015, after the architect Ulrich Bunnemann, as an investor, had agreed to undertake a renovation of the building in accordance with the monument.

Conversion concept 2015

Swimming pool before renovation

After the demolition work had already started, the Schwerin-based architect Ulrich Bunnemann presented the city with an offer to buy and a concept for the conversion of the hall. This envisaged a renovation in line with historic monuments . While the building envelope was to be retained in its shape, the plan was to restructure the interior of the building as much as possible.

A use for a small swimming pool with 12 × 4 m and 1.35 m water depth was retained. The bath is also used for the health benefits of a physiotherapy practice. The former swimming pool was given a ceiling and is now used as a cellar. In addition to this, apartments were built in 2017/18 in a part of the hall and in an adjacent area . During the renovation, the architectural office attached great importance to the use of ecological building materials . The planning was carried out by the Schwerin architects Schelfbauhütte.
