The Hypo Vorarlberg AG (short Hypo Vorarlberg ) is a universal bank with its headquarters in Bregenz ( Vorarlberg , Austria ). With total assets of around 14 billion euros, over 700 employees and 19 bank branches (15 of them in Vorarlberg), it is the largest independent bank in Vorarlberg.

history

Vorarlberger Landeshypothekenbank was founded to provide long-term, non-cancellable loans to farmers who were heavily indebted in large numbers in the 19th century. As a result of the stock market crash of 1873, tens of thousands of farms in Austria had to be foreclosed. At the same time, the mortgage bank served as the country's paying agent. After the First World War, however, the institute fell into disrepair for years due to a general lack of capital and was a “bank without banking”. It survived the crisis without any losses, as the current account business that ran on the side covered the low management costs. However, it was also forced to seize defaulting mortgage debtors. Barnabas Fink, pastor of Hittisau, well-known as a politician, therefore declared his resignation from the board of trustees of the Landeshypothekenbank in 1933, "in order to avoid impairing my pastoral work as much as possible." "Purge" in management: directors and board members have been replaced; and of course the management of the institute was also denazified after the end of the war in 1945. Thanks to the economic miracle of the 1950s and 1960s, the mortgage bank was able to develop beyond its traditional line of business - in 1945, agriculture accounted for 70 percent of the loans it issued - into an internationally active commercial bank.

Hypo Vorarlberg (until October 2017: Vorarlberger Landes- und Hypothekenbank ) was founded by the Vorarlberger Landtag with resolutions of February 3, 1894 and February 23, 1897.

Ownership

The bank was founded in 1897 by the Vorarlberg state parliament. It has been a stock corporation since 1996. The Vorarlberger Landesbank-Holding (a special fund of the Land of Vorarlberg) holds 76.8732% of ordinary shares. The remaining voting rights (23.1268%) are owned by a banking consortium from Baden-Württemberg, consisting of the Landesbank Baden-Württemberg and the Landeskreditbank Baden-Württemberg - Förderbank , within the framework of Austria Beteiligungsgesellschaft mbH .

Hypo Vorarlberg has 15 branches in its core market of Vorarlberg and other market outlets in Vienna , Graz , Wels and St. Gallen (Switzerland).

The German market is served from the branches in Bregenz and Riezlern ( Kleinwalsertal ).

In January 2014, the bank and nine other Vorarlberg companies founded the “Climate Neutrality Alliance 2025” with the aim of making all of their activities 100 percent climate neutral by 2025.

After the Panama Papers were published in April 2016, CEO Michael Grahammer announced his resignation. On January 1, 2017, Michel Haller took over the chairmanship of Vorarlberger Landes- und Hypothekenbank AG.

A committee of inquiry subsequently set up by the Vorarlberg state parliament to clarify the involvement of Hypo Vorarlberg in the business that became known with the Panama Papers did not reveal any findings of any misconduct by those responsible at the bank.
