history

theatre

A total of eight new theaters were built in Vienna between 1887 and 1912. One of them was the Vienna Citizens' Theater at Vorderen Zollamtsstraße 13. The theater was built in 1905 according to the plans of the architects Franz von Krauss and Josef Tölk and opened on December 7, 1905. It could hold up to 1238 visitors. The theater repertoire spanned an arc from spoken theater to operetta to revue. With the beginning of the Nazi era , the theater was closed, renovated in the early 1940s and reopened in 1942. The theater fell victim to the great death of Viennese theater in the 1950s. It was sold to the municipality of Vienna in 1958 and demolished in 1960.

Pressburger Bahn

From 1914 to 1945 the loop of the Pressburger Bahn , which corresponds to a tram operation and which had its terminus in Vienna , ran around the theater . Due to the war damage to the city line, the railway was no longer run from here at street level to the east after 1945, but instead on existing railway tracks such as the neighboring, low-lying station at Wien Mitte / Landstrasse.

Z-Hauptanstalt

From 1962 to 1965, the new main institute of the "Z" was built on the site according to the plans of the architects Arthur Perotti and Anton Potyka. In the 1990s, the building was renovated according to the plans of the architects Peter Podsedensek and Günther Domenig and was used as the administrative headquarters by Bank Austria , which emerged from the "Z" until the end of 2008.

"House on the Vienna"

In 2008 the building changed hands again and became the property of Signa Holding owned by real estate entrepreneur René Benko . It was renovated again according to plans by the architect Heinz Neumann . Today it houses, among other things, the editorial staff of the Vienna daily Der Standard and its website derStandard.at as well as the main office of Österreich Werbung , the state advertising organization for tourism in Austria. According to a newspaper report on October 27, 2015, Allianz Real Estate, a company of the German insurance group Allianz SE , will become the new owner; the purchase price is allegedly 94 million euros.
