The Bilster Berg is a test and presentation track opened on April 11, 2013 in Pömbsen , a district of the city of Bad Driburg in the Höxter district in East Westphalia-Lippe . The official opening was on June 1, 2013. The track is part of the Bilster Berg Drive Resort , a facility for automobile tests, events for the automobile industry and club sports events. The track was designed by the architect Hermann Tilke , who designed seven current Formula 1 racing tracks . He was supported by the two-time rally world champion Walter Röhrl .

location

The Bilster Berg Drive Resort is located on the site of a former ammunition depot of the British Armed Forces in Germany and is located within a larger forest area in the eastern foreland of the Egge Mountains . The area is located in the eastern part of North Rhine-Westphalia in the Höxter district (Ostwestfalen-Lippe). The town center of Nieheim is 3 km to the east, the town center of Bad Driburg is 10 km away.

concept

According to the concept, there should be other modules such as a dynamic area and an SUV area with two courses in addition to the track . Due to the topography of the site and the associated privacy, the operator mainly expects customers from the industry for vehicle and component tests. The extensive greening should also enable vehicle presentations and press driving presentations. Races such as Formula 1 , DTM , WTCC or ADAC GT Masters are not planned and due to a lack of infrastructure such as parking spaces, grandstands, the noise contingent and sanitary facilities, not possible.

history

The planning and initiative for the construction of this plant goes back to Marcus Graf von Oeynhausen-Sierstopff.

Preparatory building measures began in February 2011, in particular the later route was exposed, the official laying of the foundation stone took place on September 27, 2011. The facility should open in summer 2012. Both an approved land use plan and an approved development plan were available. The legality of the development plan was confirmed by the Münster Higher Administrative Court in spring 2011. On August 5, 2011, the operating company announced that the approval process in accordance with the Federal Immission Control Act had been completed and the operating license had been issued. The special operating days, i.e. the days on which events with increased noise levels are carried out, have been reduced from 18 to 10 days.

The decision of the Higher Administrative Court in Münster on May 3, 2012 revoked the validity of the partial approval for the route until the main proceedings were concluded. In the decision, the track is referred to as a racing and presentation track .

On October 31, 2012, the residents' lawsuit was dismissed after significant cuts were made in the area of ​​special opening days and events and greater control of noise was guaranteed.

Route characteristics

The total length of the route is 4.2 km. It can be divided into a 1.8 km long west loop and a 2.4 km long east loop. The shorter west loop is topographically demanding, the east loop the faster part of the route. The absolute height difference over the entire length is 72 m, the greatest drop is 26 percent, the greatest gradient 20 percent. In total, there are 44 tubs and crests up and down over 102 m altitude meters. The difference in altitude per kilometer is 17 m on the Bilster Berg. For comparison: on the Nürburgring-Nordschleife it is 14 m. The route is mostly 12 meters wide. In the "Mausefalle", a very demanding section of the route with a gradient of 26 percent, the curve widens to 13 meters. Immediately afterwards it goes into the steep section with an incline of up to 21 percent. Due to the numerous troughs and crests, many curves are sometimes difficult or completely hidden from view.

Secondary use

In addition to the area of ​​the Bilster Berg Drive Resort , the mandatory compensation areas according to CEF ( CEF measure ) and so-called substitute habitats were created on an additional 45 hectares . There are currently five Galloway cattle living in and in the neighboring forest , which are also part of the ecological compensation measures. This very robust breed lives outdoors all year round and produces high quality organic meat.

Costs and financing

The construction costs amounted to approx. 34 million euros, whereby these funds were raised exclusively privately together with 172 investors.

criticism

Citizens and environmental associations had submitted almost 200 objections to the route. The route was created in a forest area in the immediate vicinity of the planned Teutoburg Forest and Eggegebirge National Park, a retreat for several endangered animal species. That is why the environmental groups opposed the construction.

Westfalenring

A good ten years before the Bilster Berg project, there was also a project at Stoppelberg near Steinheim (Westphalia), 8 km away, to build a test track that was to be called the Westfalenring . The racetrack architect Hermann Tilke was also involved in this project. However, the racetrack was not realized.
