The evening of recitations , 1860

The recitation ( Latin recitatio , reading aloud ) or the reading describes the interpretation of works of poetry and prose with the help of language and representation . The aim is to make literary works audible; this can be done by a soloist or a group of lecturers. Interpretation techniques such as breathing technique, voice technique and speech technique are important.

Effects

The lecturer uses voice , language, posture and movement to convey the emotions and thoughts of the text to the listener.

Reading aloud encourages children to speak and concentrate . 37% of children stated in one study that they never had a read. This percentage is largely independent of the parents' income, educational level and migrant background.

Reciters

In the Hellenic , later Roman antiquity , the reciter (solo or with musicians) was a welcome or heard extra at the feast; Until modern times, the tradition of having a monk appointed as a lecturer recited from the religious rules or from the lives of saints or legends for edification has been preserved in monasteries for the main meal .

Reciters can also be found in Islam . The recitation of the Koran in the original Arabic has given rise to a science of its own, the tajjid . Among the most famous reciters are Mishari Raschid al-Afasi , Mahmoud Khalil Al-Hussary and Muhammad Siddique El Minshawi. Quran recitations have been increasingly recorded since the last century and are therefore also distributed in digital form.

Conserved recitation

A modern variant of the oral communication of literature are audio books , which allow a variety of forms of performing texts on sound carriers, from simple recitation to radio plays . The best-known German-speaking audio book speakers include Gert Westphal , Rufus Beck ( Harry Potter ), Christian Brückner and Oliver Steller .

Legal

According to German law , the recitation of a work to a public encroaches on the author's right of recitation ( §§ 19 , 15 Paragraph 2 No. 1, Paragraph 3 of the Copyright Act). It therefore generally requires the approval of the respective rights holder (for example: author, publisher). The prerequisite, however, is that the public is present, which, according to the case law of the Court of Justice, presupposes an indefinite number of potential addressees and a “fairly large number” of people. An infringement of third-party copyrights regularly triggers injunctive relief and claims for damages ( Section 97 UrhG).

The copyright expires 70 years after the death of the author ( standard protection period , § 64 UrhG); thereafter, reading is unproblematic in terms of copyright.
