Zdenko "Denny" Vrandečić (born February 27, 1978 in Stuttgart ) is a Croatian computer scientist .

Vrandečić attended the Geschwister-Scholl-Gymnasium in Stuttgart and studied computer science and philosophy at the University of Stuttgart from 1997 and received his doctorate in 2010 at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology , where he worked as a research assistant in the knowledge management research group at the Institute for Applied Computer Science and Formal Description Languages from 2004 to 2012 (AFIB) was. In 2010 he was at the University of Southern California (ISI). Vrandečić worked on the Knowledge Graph at Google . In September 2019, Denny Vrandečić announced that he was taking on a new role in Google's development department, which was to explain the Wikimedia projects to the other employees. In July 2020, he left Google and moved to the Wikimedia Foundation , where he has since been working on building Abstract Wikipedia , a new sister project of Wikipedia . The aim is to use structured data from Wikidata to create a multilingual, machine-operated knowledge platform.

Vrandečić deals with knowledge databases, data mining , massive web-based collaboration and the semantic web . In 2012/13 he was project manager for Wikidata at Wikimedia Germany . With Markus Krötzsch (who was also a long time in the knowledge management group at KIT) he is co-developer of the Semantic MediaWiki (SMW), which was also the inspiration for Wikidata.

He is one of the founders and administrators of the Croatian Wikipedia . In 2008 he was the head of the Wikimania scientific program .
