The State prison in Vridsløselille ( Danish : Statsfængslet Vridsløselille i) is a former detention facility with a closed prison that in the location Albertslund Albertslund - municipality is that for Capital Region belongs. The detention center or locality is about 14 km west of central Copenhagen . The prison was named after the former village of Vridsløselille , which is now part of the small town of Albertslund. It was in operation from 1859 to 2016.

The prison was used to house offenders in a closed prison, as well as detainees . It had a capacity of 241 occupants. In 2012 there were 221 inmates. Only men over the age of 23 who came from the Danish island of Zealand or the Sjælland region were accommodated in the detention center . The majority of inmates served long sentences, with around 40 percent of inmates serving eight years or more.

history

In 1859 the prison was put into operation to improve the accommodation of convicted inmates according to the "Philadelphia system". This included an all-day total isolation of the prisoners, with the aim of giving them time to repent of their sins and to be reconciled with God ; in addition, a possible negative influence of fellow prisoners who had committed more serious offenses should be avoided.

The prisoners served their entire sentence in a prison cell, where they also stayed at work and during leisure time. When the prisoners moved outside of their cells, they had to wear a mask so that they would not be recognized and protected by the other prisoners. The mask penalty was maintained until 1924. After that, it was possible to wear a mask on a voluntary basis until World War II .

Any conversation or contact between the prisoners was forbidden. In the school of the detention center and in the prison church , it was impossible for them to see each other. The respective rooms were divided into various small bays so that only the teachers , priests and the supervisory staff were able to overlook the prisoners.

The isolation principle in Vridsløselille prison was particularly strong in the 19th century.

The original plan was to close the prison by early 2017 and to move the prisoners to a new prison near Nørre Alslev on the island of Falster . After massive security problems, the prisoners were transferred in November 2015. On January 20, 2016, the last prisoners left the prison; now the building is used as accommodation for asylum seekers.

Prison escape

The most spectacular escape from Vridsløselille prison took place on August 27, 1995, when an escape helper tore a 13-meter-wide hole in the wall of the state prison with a wheel loader . Behind this escape stood the incarcerated "criminal king " Lars Hitchinson Hansen , also known as the "White Lars" ("Hvide Lars"). A total of 13 prisoners managed to escape.

The Danish robber Brian Bo Larsen , sentenced for life, tried a total of twenty times to escape from the state prison. He last managed to escape on the night of December 12th and 13th, 2014. Larsen fled through a window and sawed up the bars. Then he rappelled from the window and with the help of a second smuggled rope over the roof of the prison 15  m down again. As early as 2005 he escaped in a garbage can with the help of accomplices in the Copenhagen city cleaning service.

Olsen Gang

Egon Olsens vej (Egon-Olsen-Weg)

The state prison became known to the general public in Denmark and beyond through the Olsen Gang films by Erik Balling and Henning Bahs . Most of the films in this series began and ended in front of the main entrance to the prison. In 2004, after the death of Ove Sprogøe , the actor who played the eponymous Egon Olsen, part of the street in front of the prison was officially renamed Egon Olsens vej (Egon-Olsen-Weg); the rest of the way to the prison is still called Fængselsvej (prison path ).
