Vuia Mor , Scottish Gaelic Fuaigh Mòr , is a Scottish island in the Outer Hebrides . It is located in the council area of the same name and was historically part of the traditional county of Ross-shire or the administrative county of Ross and Cromarty .

geography

Vuia Mor is located in Loch Roag Bay off the west coast of the Isle of Lewis . The island lies between Great Bernera and Lewis, from which it is separated by 730 meters and 580 meters wide waterways. The sister island Vuia Beg is 680 meters southwest, Vacasay around one kilometer northwest.

The island has a maximum length of 1.81 kilometers and a width of about one kilometer. This results in an area of 84  hectares . Its highest point rises 68 meters above sea level.

history

The island, which is now uninhabited, was inhabited until the middle of the 19th century, when around 50 people lived there. It was then brutally depopulated during the Highland Clearances to make grazing land for sheep.

However, the settlement of Vuia Mors can be traced back to the Stone or Bronze Ages . There are several cairns on the island. An arrangement of stones on a headland suggests the possibility that a prehistoric ritual site was located there. Two other Cairns probably date from the time of the Viking settlement .
