Exhibition areas

Geology and volcanology

The "Geology and Volcanology" exhibition area is intended to provide basic information on the formation of the Eastern Eifel landscape. The focus is on the volcanoes of the Eastern Eifel and the volcanic development of the landscape around the Laacher See over the past 300,000 years. A film, illuminated pictures, large photos and rock samples explain the special features of (Eifel) volcanism. A film with the title "Volcanoes of the East Eifel - a hot story" shows animation and footage of volcanic eruptions that are similar to those of the East Eifel.

Archeology and the history of technology

The "Archeology and History of Technology" exhibition area focuses on people as beneficiaries of the volcanic landscape. Large photos, luminous images and exhibits show the mining and use of volcanic raw materials, especially basalt lava and tuff, in different epochs: above-ground basalt mining in quarries in Roman antiquity, medieval to modern underground mining of basalt and modern open-cast mining. In Roman antiquity and in the Middle Ages, millstones were primarily made from basalt stone; in modern times mainly building and stone blocks.

For the tufa, which has been used as a building material for centuries, the main theme is underground mining during Roman antiquity.

Reconstructions of original products, such as B. those of Roman hand mills can be tried out in the exhibition.

The trade at the Andernach am Rhein transshipment point is also the subject of the exhibition. Products made from basaltic lava and tuff were loaded onto ships in the port there and transported over long distances. So from Andernach large quantities of stones from the Laacher See area came to the Lower Rhine as building material. Millstones were exported to the British Isles. The trade is symbolized by the model of a Roman cargo ship, a flat-bottomed ship ( Prahm ).

The 7,000-year history of rock mining is shown in a separate cinema in the film "Stone Times - On the Trail of an Old Industry".

Stone adventure garden

In the outdoor area of the Vulkanpark information center, the stone adventure garden offers volcanic stones for hearing, feeling, making music and moving. Adjacent to the Vulkanpark information center is the Rauscherpark, another Vulkanpark station.
