The German Slate Mine is an adventure mine and museum . It is located 16 meters below the Genoveva Castle in the town of Mayen .

The tunnel labyrinth has a total length of 340 meters.

The tunnels go back to an air raid shelter that was built towards the end of the Second World War to protect the civilian population and at the end of 1944 (see German Western Front 1944/1945 and Ardennes Offensive ) offered around 3,000 civilians protection from air raids . Mayen was destroyed to about 90 percent, especially in the air raids of December 12, 1944 and January 2, 1945.
