Göpelwerk on the Museumslay

The Museumslay in Mendig is an open-air exhibition on the basalt mining and processing basalt and is one of the stations of the volcano park .

Basalt stone was mined underground in Mendig until 1964. Approx. 3 km² of the city are undermined by the mining and a network of tunnels and shafts was created. The Museumslay is located together with the Lava Dome and the lava cellars on the "Museum Island". While volcanism and the resulting basalt deposits are explained in the “Lava Dome” volcano museum, the lava cellars 32 meters below ground testify to the underground mining of the basalt stone. The operations that took place during basalt mining or processing above ground are shown on the museum layout .

This includes the cutting of the raw blocks, the production of millstones and the preparation of building blocks. The exhibition includes numerous workpieces in all stages of processing and finished basalt products. In addition, a wagon train and hoists from various eras are on display: a gopel factory , an electric crane and a steel tripod. A stonemason and forge complete the idea of the everyday work of the layers.
