The High Beech , also Fornicher head called, is a by a volcanic eruption in the Quaternary with mining in the Eifel with a height of 318  m above sea level. NN . It is located between Brohl and Namedy in the immediate vicinity of the Rhine Valley and close to the Laacher See .

Volcanism

Typical for the volcanism of this region are the large temporal intervals, often only one-time, violent phreatomagmatic eruptions at the same location with subsequent extraction of considerable amounts of basaltic lava. The last and probably only eruption of the Hohe Beech took place around 110,000 years ago.

In Roman times and the early Middle Ages , the basalt rock of the high beech was used as a building material, u. a. for the construction of the Roman bridge in Trier .

Due to its proximity to the Laacher See volcano, which is currently dormant but not yet extinct, as well as a number of effects that have not yet been adequately researched, which indicate persistent and increasing magmatic activity, some scientists believe that a new eruption in this region is likely held.

At present (May 2008) there are no signs of an outbreak in the foreseeable future.

The geology professor Ulrich C. Schreiber describes in his novel The Flight of the Ants a fictional eruption of the volcano in the present.
