Location of Wölferbütt in Vacha

Wölferbütt is a district of the city of Vacha in the southwestern Wartburg district in Thuringia.

geography

The local area covers an area of 4.60 km². Wölferbütt is about 400 m high at the foot of the Dietrichsberg in the Auersberger Kuppenrhön , about 45 kilometers southwest of Eisenach . The localities Mariengart and Masbach also belong to the district of Wölferbütt . On June 30, 2009, 14 residents lived in the Masbach district.

history

Wölferbütt was first mentioned as Steinfeld on August 31, 786 in a deed of donation from Charlemagne to the Hersfeld monastery . The village kept this name until the Thirty Years War .

In 1908 a farmer found Celtic jewelery and tools in the Wölferbütter Feldflur, evidence of a very early settlement. On the Dietrichsberg there are also walls made of basalt stones and terraced fields. These are probably not from the Celtic era, but were probably built by local farmers during the Thirty Years' War.

Mariengart was first mentioned as Schalkeslohe . In 1339 a Servite monastery was founded there, which was moved to Vacha in 1368 . The monastery buildings were destroyed in the Peasants' War in 1525 .

Today the ruins of a burial chapel from 1676 and the remains of a barn of the monastery still stand in Mariengart. The chapel was built for Kunigunde von Boineburg and Friedrich von Buttlar. In 1704 it burned down during repair work.

Masbach used to be a knightly court.

As of December 31, 2013, the place was incorporated into the city of Vacha .

legend

According to a legend, today's place name can be traced back to the following event:

At the end of the Thirty Years War, the hardship was so great that even the wolves were starving. Therefore, a wolf ventured into the village to find something to eat in a barrel (vat). A farmer found him there and killed him.

Probably the place name Wölferbütt goes back to a nobleman "Wolf von Buttlar", who had larger possessions in the corridor of the place in the 16th century .
