history

WHAM is the oldest radio station in Rochester. In March 1922 newspaper went Rochester Times-Union of Frank Gannett with the radio station WHQ on the air. However, the station's success was only moderate and short-lived due to technical problems. The transmission equipment was sold and under the new callsign the station came back on July 11, 1922 as WHAM.

WHAM quickly established itself in Rochester and became an affiliate of NBC Red soon after that network was founded in 1926. The frequency was changed and the power increased to 50 kW.

Rochester's first VHF station came from WHAM: in 1939 as W8XVB , later as W51R and finally as WHFM on 45.1 MHz and then on 98.9 MHz. The WHAM-owned station pioneered this then-new technology in western New York.

Rochester's first television station went on air in 1949 with WHAM-TV 6. WHAM, WHAM-TV and WHFM eventually moved together to Humboldt Street. During this time, the WHAM medium wave transmitter moved to its current location in Chili, which is closer to the city.

The group American Radio Systems in 1996 bought the Lincoln Group , to the WHAM now belonged. As a condition to avoid cartels, the group had to sell WHAM and other stations. Jacor bought the transmitter and its sister station WHTK .
