W Serpentis is a binary star about 3000  light years away . It belongs to the eclipsed stars . Sometimes it is also treated as a prototype of the W Serpentis stars . At least one of the stars is a giant star .

W-Serpentis stars possibly go through several phases by mass transfer in which the spectra change and accordingly also the classification, whereby several classes of variable stars would simply represent different stages of stellar evolution in these close binary star systems.
