Wacław Szymanowski (born August 23, 1859 in Warsaw , † July 22, 1930 in Warsaw ) was a Polish sculptor and painter . His Chopin monument in Warsaw's Łazienki Park is world-famous .

life and work

Szymanowski studied sculpture and painting with Cyprian Godebski at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris from 1875 to 1879 and then until 1882 at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich . There he had a painting studio together with Stanisław Grocholski . Szymanowski lived in Paris until 1905. He dealt with painting, drawing and graphics. His interest at the time was genre painting with a focus on mountain dwellers like the Hutsuls .

In 1895, Szymanowski turned exclusively to sculpture. His paintings and sculptures are exhibited in the National Museums in Warsaw, Krakow and Poznan. In addition to numerous grave monuments, he created well-known monuments.

  • Chopin Monument in Warsaw , the design from 1909 was erected in 1926. The memorial was blown up by the German occupiers in 1940 and reconstructed until 1958. A copy is in Hamamatsu , Japan.
  • Macierzyństwo (Motherhood), design from 1903, installed in 1929 in Traugutt Park in Warsaw.
  • Artur Grottger monument in Krakow, design from 1898, erected in 1903.
  • Juliusz Słowacki Memorials, a monument based on a design from 1905, was erected in Wroclaw in 1984 ; Another monument is in the St. Stanislaus Church in Kremenets, Ukraine .
  • Funerary monument for Erazm and Anna Jerzmanowski, Rakowicki Cemetery in Krakow.
  • Funerary monument to his father, Powązki Cemetery in Warsaw.

In May 1923 the artist was awarded the Officer's Cross of the Orderu Odrodzenia . Wacław Szymanowski died on July 22, 1930 at the age of 70 and was buried in the Rakowicki Cemetery in Kraków.

Szymanowski was the son of the publicist and poet Wacław Szymanowski (1821–1886) and married to the American Gabriela Turner. The son Wacław Szymanowski (1895-1965) became a physicist and politician.
