The Wachberg is a 496 meter high mountain about one kilometer north of Saupsdorf directly on the border with the Czech Republic .

history

The most likely origin of the name goes back to "Wache-Berg", since in the 15th century the border between the Kingdom of Bohemia and the Electorate of Saxony ran along the ridge and the mountain was used by the border guards as a viewpoint and guard station.

A first tavern was built around 1851 as a result of the emerging tourism in Saxon Switzerland . The name "Swiss Crown", by which the mountain is known primarily in the tourism industry , comes from this time . Today there is the Wachbergbaude on the mountain , a restaurant and boarding house that has been family-owned since 1897.

On September 30, 2011, a memorial plaque was unveiled on the mountain on the occasion of the 200th anniversary of the emergency landing of the balloonist Wilhelmine Reichard .

geology

In terms of landscape, the mountain belongs to Saxon Switzerland, but geologically to the Lusatian mountains. The mountain range consists of Lusatian granodiorite, in the hillside forests there are also block heaps . The rock is penetrated by a basalt stock on the southern slope, which was quarried in a now overgrown quarry below the summit plateau until the end of the 19th century.

tourism

The mountain offers a spacious view of the table mountains of the Elbe Sandstone Mountains in the south and the Eastern Ore Mountains with Geisingberg and Kahleberg in the southwest. In the east the view extends to Schneekoppe in the Giant Mountains with very good visibility conditions .

Along the ridge runs the "Dr.-Alfred-Meiche-Weg" leading from Sebnitz to Hinterhermsdorf - a mountain hiking trail that was set up in honor of the German historian and folklorist Alfred Meiche and here at the same time forms part of the European long-distance hiking trail E3 . A cross-border hiking trail branches off to neighboring Mikulášovice in the Czech Republic not far from the cottage .

From Saupsdorf a road leads to a parking lot directly below the hilltop, although the access can be considerably restricted in winter.
