Location of Wachendorf in Lower Saxony

The village of Wachendorf belongs to the city of Lingen and is run by it as part of the Altenlingen district. The village is located about five kilometers northwest of the city of Lingen in the Emstal an der Ems conservation area .

history

Wachendorf was founded around 1,200 years ago when farmers built the first farm on a hill on the Ems. In the year 1000, the place was first mentioned as Wachendorphe in the lift registers of Corvey Abbey . Little by little, new houses were built and new residents found their homes there. In the 19th century, new settlers were settled in the Mühlengraben colony in the Wachendorfer area . According to levers, there were twelve households in Wachendorf and five in Mühlengraben in 1857. During the Second World War, parts of the village were destroyed, but they were rebuilt in large community work.

Until 1948 Wachendorf belonged to the parish of Hesepe , then to Dalum , district of Meppen . Wachendorf was incorporated into Wietmarschen on March 1, 1974, initially as part of the Lower Saxony municipal reform , originally in the Grafschaft Bentheim district, then in the Lingen district . On August 1, 1977, the Lingen district was largely absorbed in the newly founded Emsland district ; Wachendorf came with the municipality of Wietmarschen in the county of Bentheim.

On July 1, 1978, Wachendorf (with Herzford and Rheitlage) was reclassified to the town of Lingen (Ems) , district of Emsland.

In Wachendorf there is a memorial for fallen parishioners in the First and Second World Wars and a rifle club founded in 1913.
