The guard Zeller dolomite counts as Kleinziegenfelder dolomite to the franc Dolomites . The dolomite is mined in the southern Franconian Jura , near Wachenzell, north of Eichstätt . In the past, deposits were also mined between Ingolstadt and Regensburg . This dolomite rock was formed around 140 million years ago in the Upper Jura .

Rock description and mineral inventory

Its color ranges from grayish brown to yellowish gray to (earth) brown. It is a medium-grain natural stone with partially calcite-filled veins. In addition to dolomite, there are iron-containing clayey substances. Its proportion of dolomite is 94 percent and the pore size is up to 0.6 mm. The Wachenzeller dolomite belongs to the facies of the sponge lawn limestone, which are secondarily dolomitized.

The density is around 2.6 kg / dm³, the compressive strength averages 90 N / mm² and the flexural strength is 9 N / mm².

use

It is weather-resistant and one of the few limestones that is absolutely resistant to de-icing salt (no noticeable damage in the salt blast test). Fading only occurs after a long period of exposure outdoors. Due to its resistance to frost and de-icing salt, it is suitable for sidewalks and traffic areas where salt is spread in winter. It can be polished and is flammable.

Wachenzeller dolomite is used for solid buildings, bricks, wells, as floor, stair and wall covering as well as for tombs. The surfaces are typically roughly or finely ground, polished, flamed or bush hammered.

Some examples of its use are: Museum Center Berlin-Dahlem , Krempa House in Frankfurt, H + M department store in Regensburg , high school in Burglengenfeld , St. Stephen's Church in Mainz , Donisl restaurant and the entrance to the Geological Institute in Munich .

classification

Only a few dolomites are mined in Germany. Similar occurrences are:

In addition to the Solnhofen limestone, three other limestones are quarried along the Altmühl in the southern Franconian Jura, all of which have long been used as stone in architecture: the Solnhofen limestone , the Jura marble and the Kelheim limestone .

Wachenzeller dolomite used to be mined in several quarries between Kelheim and Ingolstadt .
