Great Hell Valley
The Große Höllental in Lower Austria is an open rock basin and a side valley of the Höllental on the northeast side of the Rax massif next to the Weichtalhaus .
description
The valley is a karstified dry valley . The steep-walled rock basin in north-south direction is around four kilometers long. The valley is bounded on the west by the Klobenwand , which belongs to the municipality of Schwarzau in the mountains ; On the east side through the Loswand , which is located in the municipality of Reichenau an der Rax . The hydrographic area is 9.75 km².
The valley is open to the Schwarza in the north (at about 540 m above sea level ), but fenced and only accessible via the Schönbrunner staircase named after the technician of the Vienna waterworks Franz Schönbrunner . At the entrance to the valley, next to Höllental Straße, there is a memorial for the original sources of the first Viennese high spring water pipeline , the Höllentalquellen monument .
The southwestern head of the valley is in the area of the Wolfgang Dirnbacher Hut at 1,477 m. On the south-east side at the end of the valley, the Höllentalblick was built by the German and Austrian Alpine Association on a rocky nose (1620 m) in 1910 .
Above the Klobenwand, the Rudolfsteig is laid out parallel to the longitudinal axis of the Großer Höllental and the Wachthütt ( e ) lkammsteig to the east . No hiking trail leads from the valley itself to the Rax massif plateau, but there are four via ferratas, some of which are moderately difficult .

Rise
Rudolfsteig
The Rudolfsteig was built by the Austrian Mountain Association and was ceremoniously ascended on August 8, 1920. A partly steep hiking trail that mostly leads along the upper edge of the cliffs of the Klobenwand. The starting point is the Höllental Straße next to the Weichtalhaus, the end point is at Klobentörl at 1648 m, and around 1100 meters in altitude are overcome.
Wachthütt (e) lkammsteig
This was built on Wachthütt (e) lkamm in 1906 by the alpine company D'Speckbacher. A very easy via ferrata - more like a hiking trail - that only reaches difficulty level A of via ferratas through the many flat ladders in the lower area . The start of the climb is on Höllentalstraße just before an avalanche gallery next to the Weichtalhaus. The “extended” end point is the Otto-Schutzhaus at 1642 m, with around 1100 meters of altitude to be overcome.
Alpine Club Trail
The via ferrata with a difficulty level B leads from the rear valley floor to the Höllental view (1620 m). It was built at the instigation of Camillo Kronich (1876-1958) in the interest of direct access from the Großer Höllental to the Otto-Schutzhaus (1644 m) managed by Kronich by the Viennese master locksmith August Cepl and on October 9, 1910 in the presence of the President of the DÖAV Main Committee, Adolf von Guttenberg (1839-1917), opened. Entry is at a height of around 1000 m via five steep ladders at the Ceplwand.
Hoyossteig
The Hoyossteig was built in 1912 at the instigation of Ernst Karl Graf Hoyos-Sprinzenstein (1856–1940). The via ferrata with a level of difficulty A / B overcomes the Klobenwand on the west side of the Großer Höllental and leads from around the middle of the basin up to the Rudolfsteig.
Teufelsbadstubensteig
The origin of this path in the classic style is a hunting path that Archduke Johann had built in 1802. After this was forgotten, the Austrian Tourist Club had a climbing system built in 1894. The via ferrata with a difficulty level B overcomes the east-facing rock face of the Großer Höllental. It leads from about the middle of the basin over the Loswand up to the Wachthütt (e) lkammsteig.
More climbing
- Gaislochsteig (Listlsteig); this leads from the rear valley floor over the south-western end of the valley (Geißloch) to the Wolfgang-Dirnbacher-Hütte (1477 m) and offers ice climbing in winter .
- Gustav-Jahn-Steig; This trail, named after the Viennese high alpinist and painter Gustav Jahn (1879-1919), not least in recognition of his performance in the construction of the Alpine Club Trail, which was opened a year earlier, forms a cross-connection between the Alpine Club Trail and the Gaislochsteig and has a B level of difficulty. Like the Alpenvereinssteig, it was built by the art locksmith August Cepl at the instigation of Camillo Kronich; it was released on July 22, 1911.
