The forest glassworks on the Holzminde was a medieval forest glassworks near Fohlenplacken in Solling , which is dated to the 12th century. It is considered the second oldest of its kind in Europe after the Waldglashütte in Kreickgrund and probably produced glass for the Corvey Abbey .

description

The forest glassworks, of which no structures have been preserved above ground, was located about two kilometers north of Fohlenplacken on the stream of the Holzminde . The site is located near the county road 50 to Holzminden west of Giersberg in a forest owned by the Lower Saxony State Forests . The remains of the Waldglashütte were discovered by a local researcher while searching for the locations of earlier glassworks in Solling.

An archaeological investigation of the Waldglashütte took place in 2017 under the direction of the archaeologist Hans-Georg Stephan from the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg . It was a research project of the German Federal Environment Foundation . During the excavation , the foundations of three vaulted clay glass ovens with several openings on the outside were uncovered. According to research, the ovens were operated between the years 1100 and 1150. Among the recovered finds are glass rings as pieces of jewelry; Glass drops and shards of glass vessels, among others in the colors blue and green. A special find was blue glass with white paint, which according to the current state of knowledge was only made in the Orient at that time.

According to Stephan, in addition to window glass, the Waldglashütte also produced valuable drinking vessels made of lead glass , as indicated by the lead plate finds. In his estimation, the window glass produced here was used in the original building of the Corvey Monastery.
