history

Since there is also a Waldkirch near Freiburg, it is difficult to clearly determine the first documented mention of this Waldkirch. However, the year 858 is widely considered to be the year in which this forest church was first mentioned. The two communities Gaiß and Schmitzingen were combined with Waldkirch in 1935 to form one community. This was incorporated into the city of Waldshut on July 1, 1971. This merged on January 1, 1975 with Tiengen / Hochrhein to form the new town of Waldshut-Tiengen. Since then, Schmitzingen has been a separate village within the new city.
