Valentin Ignatjewitsch Filatjew ( Russian Валентин Игнатьевич Филатьев ; born January 21, 1930 in Malinovka , Tyumen Oblast , Soviet Union , † September 15, 1990 probably in Orjol , Orjol Oblast , Russia ) was a Soviet aspirant cosmonaut . He belonged to the first cosmonaut group in the Soviet Union , but retired prematurely for disciplinary reasons without having participated in a space flight.

Life

Military career

After graduating from school in 1945, Filatjew was trained as a primary school teacher until 1951 and then joined the Soviet Union's air force. He completed his training as a fighter pilot at the Stalingrad Military Aviation School and was made a lieutenant on November 29, 1955 . Then he served together with his later comrades in the cosmonaut group Rafikow and Varlamow in an air defense unit .

Selection and training as a cosmonaut

When the Soviet Union was looking for military pilots from August 1959 to train them to be space travelers, Filatjew was shortlisted and was accepted into the group on March 25, 1960. From June 17th, the First Cosmonaut Group of the Soviet Union , which comprised 20 candidates, was complete. On May 9, 1960 he was promoted to captain . He completed his basic training on April 3, 1961 with the exam. Filatjew, however, was not one of the six candidates who should be trained first for the Vostok spaceship . On December 16, 1961 he was awarded the (not officially to be worn) title of cosmonaut. Parallel to his cosmonaut training, he studied at the military academy for engineers of the air force "Prof. NJ Schukowski ” , but without concluding this.

On March 27, 1963, Filatjew and his comrades Neljubow and Anikejew were arrested drunk for improper behavior at the Chkalovsky airfield . According to the reports, the patrolling security forces were ready to overlook the incident if the cosmonauts apologized, which Anikeiev and Filatiev were willing to respond. Nelyubov refused, however, so the incident was reported to the authorities. Since there were earlier incidents, all three cosmonauts were released from the cosmonaut corps on April 17, 1963 (officially only on May 4, 1963). Among other things, Yuri Gagarin had asked the cosmonaut commander Kamanin to remove Filatiev from the group, but not that of the other two comrades.

Further career

After leaving the cosmonaut group, Filatjew served again as a pilot in the Air Force until 1969. On November 29, 1969, he resigned from military service with the rank of major and worked at the Gipropribor Institute in Oryol until 1977 . He then worked as a civil defense trainer until his retirement in 1987.

Death and grave

Filatev died of lung cancer at the age of 60. His grave is in the Troiski cemetery in Oryol.

Private

Filatev was married and had a son.
