Valentin Stepanowitsch Varlamow ( Russian Валентин Степанович Варламов ; born August 15, 1934 in Suchaja Terejoschka , Penza Oblast , Soviet Union ; † October 2, 1980 in Moscow , Soviet Union) was a Soviet aspirant cosmonaut . He belonged to the first cosmonaut group of the Soviet Union , but retired prematurely for medical reasons without having participated in a space flight.

Life

Air Force

In 1952 Varlamov graduated from school in Sol-Ilezk . He then joined the Soviet Air Force and was trained as a fighter pilot. He completed this training in 1955 in Stalingrad .

Selection and training as a cosmonaut

When the Soviet Union was looking for military pilots from August 1959 to train them to be space travelers, Varlamov was shortlisted and on April 28, 1960 joined the First Cosmonaut Group of the Soviet Union.

Since this group was too large to be able to train all of them at the same time, six candidates were selected for the first flights of the Vostok spaceship. In addition to Yuri Gagarin , Varlamov also belonged to this elite group .

On Sunday, July 24, 1960, Varlamov went on a swimming trip to the nearby Bear Lakes. He jumped into water that was too shallow and broke a cervical vertebra . He was hospitalized for over a month and his place in the six went to Bykowski .

Varlamov, meanwhile promoted to captain , returned to training, but was finally expelled from the cosmonaut corps on March 6, 1961 for medical reasons.

Further career

In contrast to his comrade Kartaschow , who also had to break off his cosmonaut training in April 1960 for medical reasons, Varlamov stayed in the training center and became an instructor for cosmonauts. He was promoted to major in 1964 and lieutenant colonel in 1968 .

He died on October 2, 1980 after falling at home.

Private

Varlamov was married and had a daughter.
